New album from Roel Funcken (Funckarma)

Sunday, April 25th, 2010

Roel Funcken (1 of the 2 Funcken brothers, collectively known as Funckarma) has just released his own solo album: Vade (out now via Adnoiseam). Similar in many regards to the Funckarma sound, this album is quite rich (and long – 16 tracks!). I won’t bore you with a song by song break down, get the album and do that yourself. What I will say though is that its very electronic, yet very organic at the same time. I think its also the melodies and layering of sounds that give this album a warm feel, despite the groaning synths and distorted noises that creep around you. Check out this track for a preview, its got that pumping rhythm, sounds very digital, but still seems organic in someway, almost alive : track #5, Fictional Stub :

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

This release will please anyone who like Funckarma, but should also be attractive to those looking for a fuller sound than your average dubstep fare. I mean this ain’t really dubstep, but there is bass in there, some starkness, plenty of head bobbing, probably a spliff or two, and well, its dope, so check it out!

And for anyone who hasn’t heard of Funckarma yet, here’s a recent live set by Funckarma at the FAQ festival in Den Bosch on the 9th of april 2010.

Funckarma – “Dubstoned” EP out March 4th.

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

Dutch brothers Don and Roel Funcken have been producing music under the name Funckarma for over a decade now. Rather experimental and dirty is the first thought I have, but if you dig into it, there are melodies and dynamics that really take this to a meaningful level. Their music is electronic music, with influences from all types of music, most noticably dub, IDM, & hiphop. Anyways, they’ve done a lot of things, and are set to release a new EP on the interesting dutch label Eat Concrete. This release should appeal to dubstep heads that enjoy a less commercial sound, but still enjoy a full and cohesive tune. These guys definitly know a thing or two about music, and this release is definitly worth checking out.

Below are some tunes to listen to (for more clips check out http://soundcloud.com/eatconcrete). The EP comes out March 4th and is available through Rush Hour and Eat Concrete among other places.

Mart – darth vader

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Some dude we never heard of before named Mart just posted up a pretty heavy dubstep banger in the dutch dubstep producers sound cloud. Like I said, I don’t know who this cat is, but with a hyves account called: jeanpierreledouche.hyves.nl, he’s gotta be cool. There are numerous decent tunes on his page, but the standouts are the top two dubstep tunes. The first is “darth vader”, which ganks the Star Wars imperial march melody, and puts it up against some slamming, moshpit style wobbler bass line. And some are gonna hate on that style, but to each his own, and this shit bangs, so take it or leave it. The other tune “hide in the woods”, sounds like some Middle Earth style dubstep. Digital never sounded so medieval to me, until this tune came along. Dubstep knights, if any exist, will surely be coming back from wars to this tune. Anyways, here are the tunes, so dig in:

the Dubstep.nl SoundCloud group

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

soundcloudOn the Dubstep.nl forum people have been posting their productions and looking for feedback for a long time. Recently though, producer Inofaith led a rallying up of dutch producers into a SoundCloud group. If you don’t know, SoundCloud is an online platform for sharing music that is strictly about posting music and getting feedback. Rather good tool to use, and if you a dutch producer I recommend you join the group. Big up to Inofaith for the iniative.

Here are some of our favorite tracks:

Some upfront heaviness from DZD2 :

An african safari at dawn type dubstep from June Miller :

There are plenty more good tunes & producers there so check it out and give some feedback : http://soundcloud.com/groups/dubstep-nl
