Live Elementz Dubstep @ SJU, Utrecht 4/12/09

Friday, December 4th, 2009

So tonight is the last LED being held at the SJU in Utrecht. Kinda sucks, but understandable, since the SJU is getting some grief for not hosting Jazz (SJU operates as a Jazz Foundation, dus…) and LED is one of their biggest parties. But whatever, i’m sure Jaymo will find a new location next year, and things will stay dope. Regardless of where it ends up, tonight is gonna be fun. I’m finally gonna roll out to Utrecht for an LED (Class/A doing visuals all night mayne!) – something i’ve been meaning to do for the past year now, but just never got around to it. If you live in Utrecht, I suggest you roll out, ’cause some of the town’s best dubstep talent is gonna be there. Here’s the lineup:

21:30 – 23:00 Dj Plus b2b Bastian
23:00 – 24:15 Dj Jaymo b2b Cold Sweat
24:15 – 01:30 El Maria b2b Dj Chillum
01:30 – 02:45 Dj Illusive b2b Murtsew
02:45 – 04:00 Dj Bojcot b2b Dj F.K.A

LIVE ELEMENTZ DUBSTEP
Friday, 04-12-09
Varkenmarkt 2, Utrecht
09:30 – 04:00
Gratis voor 23:00, later 5 E.

See you there!

Parties this week

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Yo, the week is starting off nice with the weather being like it is in Holland, let’s hope it keeps up. On the dubstep agenda this week there are some pretty good parties to check out:

Friday, August 21
Sonic Warfare @ Melkweg, Amsterdam

w/ Loefah (uk), Hijak (uk), Grimelock (be), & Piro (nl)

Its been a while since Loefah’s been in town, so will be cool to check him out again. I remember Grimelock’s set from  a past Lockdown party, and shit went off, so I expect more of the same here. Big up Piro, back from vacation, he oughta have a fresh take on things.

Saturday, August 22

UK Funky @ Panama, Amsterdam

main room (uk funky / house) : Dj NG (uk) & MC Versatile (uk), Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano (nl), Shermanology live (nl), Simon Titus (nl), & MC Spyder

studio (dubstep / dark garage) – hosted by Subbalicious : Osiris (nl), Sun O.C. & Creative (nl), & G-Selecter

UK Funky is a fresh new sound, so we’re helping kick off a fresh new night. The main room will have Rinse.fm dj Ng along with MC Versatile (whom you should know from “the Funky Anthem“). Also the main room will have several dutch djs pushing a housey/funky mix – Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano are definitly dudes to check for.  The small room, hosted by Subbalicious, will have a deeper, bassier vibe, with less house & more weight.

Saturday, August 15 : Dubstance VIII @ Nieuwe Nor, Heerlen

This weekend, Southern dubstep pushers, Dubstance are teaming up with Belgian dubstep label Je Me’en Fish for another party at Nieuwe Nor. The lineup is a mix of dutch & belgian dudues:

Vista [10Bag/Rottun/3.5 Records/UK]
Bunzero [Sub Nerds/Bass Tourist/Sub.fm|BE]
Aphone (live) [Zone Inconnue/BE]
Myrkur [Radical/F4Tmusic/Sub.fm/Dubstance/NL]
Marked [Dubstance/Heerlen Massive/NL]
Dog Mask [Dubstance/NL]
visuals bij Loudanov [Dubstance/DNNB]

Nice lineup here, Vista from the UK utilizes more of that 2-step sound; Bunzero always drops a good show, danceable and fresh; Aphone from Je Me’en Fish does a more triphop inspired sound, with lots of melody; Myrkur is also featured on the forthcoming Je Me’en Fish release, and will surely be doing his deep, melodic stuff for people to zone out on; Marked & Dogmask round off the bill with their local pizazz and Dubstance style. So if your in the south, head for Heerlen this Saturday.

Lockdown 010 – party review

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

Last Saturday, the Lockdown crew threw another party, this time at some warehouse / squat place up in Amsterdam north. Originally slated to be a 24 hour event on an island (idea scraped due to safety / permit  issues), party 010 ended being a roughly 10 hour outdoor reggae & dubstep fest. The location had a big open “parking lot” filled with beat up couches, chairs, and benches, lots of weeds and shrubs, a couple overturned boats, random rusting objects, rope, & a stage with a overhang to protect it from rain. Oh yea, and King Shiloh Soundsystem was there to fill the area with their copious amounts of speaker boxes & bass tones.

I showed up early expecting the summer sun to bring out the heads on a Saturday afternoon, but the crowd was a bit sparce. No worries, I pulled out a can of Heineken and started rolling a spliff (which ended up being impossible to do in the wind) – and then layed back in a chair, under some shade, and enjoyed the Reggae vibes for an hour or two. Eventually people started rolling in and finally some friends showed up, so I got up from my throne and walked about to party some.

Around 5 or so, J.A.M. came on the decks and got things going in the dubstep vein. Following him was Piro b2b Plus for a couple hours. Around this time I was busy dancing, smoking, eating (the food great : €5 for a hamburger on a big ass bun, potato salad, & sliced tomatoes, cucumber, & onions – lekker!), and chatting with the heads that had showed up.  Nicon was up from Rotterdam, XL from NoizBoiz was there too (I see him like everywhere!), Blauwe Fedde was back from his punk rock vacation in Spain (see picture below), & I had a good chat with Piro. My girlfriend showed up to after she got off work, and then the drinking increased. The rest of the line up was Aardvarck, Cinnaman, & Juha. I wish I could give a better synopsis of all the sets, but I thinking leaving it at: solid tunes on a solid sound system, no repeats, new shit & classics. All djs did a good job, but I was there to party, so that’s what I busied myself with.

The beer got warm and the sun went down, but things kept on rolling. There was no hassle from the cops (did see them drive by though), the location had clean & functional bathrooms, the sound system was dope, the djs kept the vibes high, and though a bigger could have been had, the crowd was a fun & animated one (beer tossing, trees in shopping carts, crutches getting swung, you know the deal). The party ended around 11pm (an hour later than planned – so no one could really complain) and I headed with my girl  into the city to get some more beer & enjoy the night life a little bit.  Big up Lockdown for a chill, summer weekend dub fest – was definitly enjoyed.

Subbalicious is hosting the small at Diesl once again on thursday, August 6. This time the lineup is

Black Salt Candy (upcoming producer/dj from utrecht, BSC will get heads nodding and feet moving with his grimey, glitchy, extra bassy beats)

Osiris (the man who brought you dubstep from the first hour, does Subbalicious Music & Media including Dubstep.nl, Brrrap.com, Subbalicious recordings, Oi! Records and a real crowd pleaser)

diesl ft. subbalicious - august 6

The last one was pretty crazy, Brutuzz b2b Gomes resulted in this happening to our friend Mick due to an acciedental head to head collision in the mosh pit:

The next one should be dope though, see you there. Also I should mention it’ll be one of the first opportunities to pick the printed version of the new Brrrap! issue #6.
